Annulment

An annulment is a court order ending a marriage. It is not a divorce. An annulment is an order declaring that the marriage is void because the marriage was not legal in the first place. Annulments are rare. There are only a few very specific grounds for getting an annulment which include:

  • If the marriage was obtained through force or duress;
  • Fraud, which may include an unrevealed pregnancy;
  • Impotence; and
  • If either party is unable to give consent to a marriage due to mental incompetence, age, or because he or she is already married.
